A ferry takes travelers from Bangkalan, Madura, to Surabaya, the East Java capital. The government operates eight ferries serving travelers to and from Madura, pending the completion in April 2009 of the Rp 3 trillion (US$279.6m) Suramadu bridge construction (in the background) that will connect the two islands. Following the construction, residents of Madura have called on the government to declare the island a special economic zone, to benefit the people. (JP/ID Nugroho)
