JAKARTA: The Environment Management Board (BPLHD) head Budirama Natakusumah on Tuesday said the city planned to hold emission tests on motorcycles in February next year.

The Jakarta administration believed motorcycles significantly contributed to air pollution in the city, Kompas.com reported.

According to regulations, two-stroke motorcycles manufactured before 2010 can emit up to 4.5 percent of carbon monoxide (CO) and 12,000 ppm hydrocarbon (HC), while four-stroke ones 5.5 percent of CO and 2,400 ppm HC.

All motorcycles made after 2010 cannot go beyond 4.5 percent of CO and 2,000 ppm of HC.

The regulation and mechanism of testing are yet to be decided. Similar tests have been imposed on cars and trucks. --JP
