JAKARTA: The West Jakarta administration plans to screen 384 drinking water refill depots within the municipality in February to ensure the water is not polluted by E. coli bacteria, an official said Monday.
According to the municipality's survey last year, out of the 640 depots across its eight districts, 60 percent of them, or 384, were found to refill water contaminated with the bacteria.
"We're still discussing it. But the screening itself is already fixed. The plan is to close down those that violate the health standard," said Ida Bagus Nyoman Banjar, head of the West Jakarta Health Agency, as quoted by beritajakarta.com.
On the other hand, those which meet the standard will be given a registration number from the agency, he added.
Mayor Djoko Ramadhan said he was ready to issue a disposition letter for the monitoring effort.
"But please do it accordingly so it won't be misunderstood as working in favor of a certain brand of drinking water," he said. -- JP
