Balinese authorities continue to allow unvaccinated dogs to roam freely on Bali's tourist beaches. On a morning walk from Legian to Kuta this week I counted eight untagged dogs. Perhaps the authorities are not cognizant with the terrible nature of rabies. First, there is no cure once symptoms appear.
The World Health Organization recommends that in rabies areas there be: The enactment and enforcement of "legislation on dog movement restriction and selective and humane capture and elimination of dogs not in compliance, with legislation".
Authorities in Bali have been trying to contain the disease, but obviously their efforts are incomplete.
Tourists simply won't come here if they are aware that there are potentially rabid dogs running free on the beaches. Soon newspapers around the world will be reporting even more widely on this mind-boggling situation.
