I am responding to a story on the front page of The Jakarta Post, (Feb. 7) titled "Jaipong dance to become latest victim of pornography law".
I am of a different opinion, believing that the Sundanese dance known as "Jaipong" should not be forbidden, but be considered an Indonesian treasure and promoted as such.
What could be more beautiful than an Indonesian woman dancing and wearing the clothing created with such artistry that represents just one exquisite facet of the art and culture of her homeland?
Her beauty and her dance also represent the proud culture and history of West Java and the city of Bandung.
It was in this city in 1955 that the leaders of Asia and Africa came together in a spirit of friendship at a time when China and the United States were on the brink of nuclear war.
There is a beauty and wisdom in Indonesia which is unique in the world.
Don't ban the Jaipong but perform it with a dignity worthy of being called art, and human.
