JAKARTA: A passenger boat sank in Bokor Island waters, Thousand Islands regency, on Saturday after being hit by 3-meter-high waves.
The boat, carrying 11 passengers and four crew, was sailing from Muara Angke, North Jakarta, to Pramuka Island when the big waves struck.
"The boat's hull cracked after it was hit by huge waves, and seawater began filling it up," said boat captain Zakariah, 45, as quoted by beritajakarta.com.
All on board reportedly survived after fishermen rescued them.
Thousand Islands Regent Abdul Rachman Andit urged boat owners to check their vessels' conditions, with high seas prevailing.
"Providing safety equipment is not enough. Boat owners must ensure their boats are strong enough to sail," he said. - JP
