NTUL, Yogyakarta: Flooding along the Opak River in Bantul regency and a landslide in Sleman regency, Yogyakarta, claimed three lives Saturday following heavy downpour upstream.

The Opak River claimed the lives of Yayan and Aji, both 10-years-old and both from Parangtritis village, Kretek, Bantul regency.

A witness said that the pair were swimming on the river using banana tree stems with two other friends when the flood came suddenly and without warning. Their two friends managed to save themselves but they drowned immediately.

Villagers and a Search and Rescue (SAR) team found one of the bodies on Saturday evening. The other was still missing as of Sunday. "We keep searching," the chairman of the SAR team said Sunday.
