Marunda Bridge ready to serve container trucks again in March

Container trucks transporting cargo from the city's northern industrial zone to the seaport will be able to use the normal route next month as restoration of the ailing Marunda Bridge in North Jakarta will be completed within two weeks.

Edison, a supervisor for the bridge's restoration project, said his workers were currently waiting for the concrete to dry before they complete the project.

"It takes at least two more weeks. After that, we can cover the concrete with asphalt," Edison told The Jakarta Post on Monday.

Edison said during the restoration project his workers had found 42 steel bolts broken.

"We have already replaced them with new bolts," he said,

Marunda Bridge, connecting Kawasan Berikat Nusantara (KBN) industrial zone in Marunda with Tanjung Priok seaport in North Jakarta, was damaged last month after several steels, which propped the bridge's structure, broke, creating a three-meter-diameter hole in the middle of the bridge.

Trucks and containers have been delivering cargos to the city seaport via Jl. Raya Cilincing, North Jakarta, creating traffic congestion along the road mostly used by residents.

A container truck normally needs less than an hour to run across the four-kilometer Marunda-Tanjung Priok route, but the new route has stretched it to five hours.

During an inspection Saturday, Transportation Minister Jusman Syafii Jamal said the closing of Marunda Bridge had decreased the containers' travel capacity from an average six trips in a day to an average 1.5 trips.

Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu asked the city's public works agency on Saturday to complete the bridge restoration as soon as possible after the agency missed its deadline last week.

The city administration plans to develop Marunda into a special economic zone, saying it had good access via the future international seaport, tollroad network and East Flood Canal - which can function as a waterway. (hwa)
