City to open tax counters in malls to reach taxpayers

The city revenue agency will launch tax outlets at selected shopping centers across the capital which will allow people to pay their taxes easily and conveniently.

Reynalda Madjid, head of the agency, said Thursday that his office would open an outlet at Senayan City mall in Senayan, South Jakarta.

“The new unit will operate on the sixth floor of the mall. The outlet will be our pilot project,” Rey said.

“The outlet will make it easy for Jakartans working or living around the area (Senayan) to pay their taxes.” he said.

However, he said, the outlets will not be equipped to serve new taxpayers (who want to apply for tax identification number or NPWP) or those who want to change their personal identity.

After Senayan City, the agency will install outlets in Pondok Indah Mall in South Jakarta and Grand Indonesia in Central Jakarta, he said.

He said the agency chose the shopping centers for their central locations.

“This is just the beginning. If the public responds well, maybe we will open more outlets,” he said. “We planned to build 20 outlets this year, but due to the global financial crisis that hit the country, we will reconsider it,” Rey said.

Riana, a resident of Patal Senayan, said she welcomed the new service.

“It’s good that the administration has such an outlet because we Jakartans need to have easy access to arrange such documents,” the 24-year-old said.

“I myself don’t know exactly where I should go if I want to arrange my personal taxes. Now, I know where to go and the good thing is, it is not far from my house,” she said.

This year, of the expected city budget of Rp 22.42 trillion, the administration hopes to gain Rp 9.39 trillion from taxes, including Rp 3.06 trillion or 32.65 percent from vehicle ownership transfer levies and Rp 2.8 trillion, or 29.8 percent, from vehicle taxes.
