URABAYA: The government has allocated Rp 200 billion (US$17 billion) to finance research on bird flu in an effort to prevent and mitigate the spread of the virus, according to the health minister.
"Foreign financial assistance is also available, but it's still under our control," Siti Fadilah Supari said after speaking at an international symposium on bird flu at the University of Airlangga (Unair) in Surabaya, East Java, Antara reported.
She was quoted as saying her office had official mechanisms for the allocation of government funds and the spending of foreign financial assistance for bird flu research activities. "There is a selection and only those having good quality will be approved. Researches using foreign donations also have their own mechanism," he said.
Meanwhile, Agus Purwadianto, head of the ministry's health research and development division, said his office had plans for bird flu research.
