s soon as vote counting begins, polling agencies will be "racing" to air quick-count results of the legislative elections, thanks to a recent Constitutional Court ruling allowing pollsters to publish their surveys on the same day as the election.
The Indonesian Survey Cycle (LSI) predicts it needs only five hours to come up with predictions for political parties securing the most votes in the elections.
"We will be able to identify the parties with the most votes for legislative seats at the House, by 5 p.m. at the latest, on Thursday," LSI chairman Denny JA says.
He predicted about 95 percent of ballots would have been counted five hours after polling was officially closed.
The Cirus Surveyors Group polling company chairman, Andrinof Chaniago, says his company would work with SCTV television station to provide a live update on the vote count, starting at around 3 p.m. on election day, April 9.
"We hope to conclude our prediction of the overall results ... at 9 p.m.," he said.
The General Elections Commission (KPU) has said balloting should be finished at midday to ensure vote counting can be completed by 7 p.m. at the latest.
The Constitutional Court recently scrapped Article 245 of the election law, which had banned the announcement of quick-count results on election day.
The court also allowed polling agencies to publicize opinion polls during the three-day cooling off period prior to election day.
The KPU welcomed the court ruling, saying it would help them educate the public about the results of the legislative elections.
"The public will be able to see the comparative results of the *winning' parties before the KPU announces the final result," commission member I Gusti Putu Artha said.
The polls body plans to announce newly elected legislators at the House on May 9, a month after the elections.
The names of elected legislative members for municipalities and regencies will be announced on April 21, with provincial legislative results to be publicized April 24.
The KPU will also use quick counts to update its results from day to day, before announcing the final results, Putu said.
