In an effort to be one of the country's recreational art icons, Ancol Dreamland Park management is set to revitalize its old art market, Pasar Seni Ancol, by holding an exhibition starting this Friday.
The event, which will be officially opened by Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo, will present contemporary fine art from some 20 local artists.
The revival of the 31-year-old Pasar Seni will be marked by the inauguration of an international-scale gallery North Art Space (NAS), followed by an exhibition themed "Hybridization", which will run until May 3.
President director of PT Pembangunan Jaya Ancol park management, Budi Karya Sumadi, said the event would present something new in contemporary fine art and would provide local artists with more opportunities in the international arena.
"Our North Art Space responds to the need of bright creators for more space and will give them more business opportunities, as well as educate and entertain people."
"Hybridization" will encompass various media, including painting, photography, installation and performance art.
Paintings will be presented by Haris Purnomo, Arie Dyanto, Soni Irawan, Sapto Sugiyo Utomo, Galam Zulkifli, Andy Dewantoro, Hanafi, NGK Ardana, Gede Mahendra Yasa, Agus Sumiantra and Irwan Bagja Dermawan (Iweng).
There will also be photography and digital art by Davy Linggar, FX Harsono and Indra Leonardi.
Heri Dono, Agus Suwage, Yani Maryani, Ketut Moniarta and Albert Yonathan will exhibit installations.
Jompet, Tromarama and Prilla Tania will display video art, while Saftari will show off both paintings and installations.
"Through this event, we also aim to endorse Jakarta as a city of culture, and to boost the growth of creative economy in the city amid the global crisis.
"We want local art to be more appreciated, and this event will hopefully be a model for the country's art industry."
In August, the Ancol Dreamland Park will also stage an art jamboree.
Indie musicians will be able to perform, as the park management will build several stages.
