s part of its CSR program, thermal coal producer PT Adaro Indonesia has made cataract operations available to residents of Tandjung district, South Kalimantan, where the company operates.
Adaro said in a statement that by 2008, nearly 3,500 patients had undergone cataract operations.
PT Adaro Indonesia is a subsidiary of PT Adaro Energy Tbk, Indonesia's second largest thermal coal producer.
Besides its cataract program, Adaro also focuses its CSR programs on developing small and medium enterprises (SMEs), including poultry and cattle breeders.
The company said that the SME program had won recognition from the social welfare minister. "The minister presented the company with Gold Awards in February 2009," it said.
The company said that the key to its CSR program has been the development and annual review of a plan encompassing community-based business development, educational programs, religious programs and social welfare programs.
"The objective of the plan is that these programs eventually become self-sustaining," it said.
