JAMBI: During the first semester of this year, the Jambi administration continued to record a high number of bird flu cases across the province.

Although this year's cases tended to decrease compared to previous years, the deadly virus was still spreading across the region.

Data from the Jambi husbandry office shows that at least 822 bird flu cases this year, mostly in Merangin regency.

Out of the cases however, no human cases were reported.

Jambi husbandry office head Hanif Lubis called on local residents to remain alert despite the decreasing number of bird flu cases.

In 2007, Jambo saw 85,404 cases of bird flu and only 9,199 cases last year, he said, adding the local administration had set up a special team to fight bird flu.

"This team has managed to reduce the number of cases by effectively improving the people's awareness of the highly dangerous virus." - JP
