High Court acquits libel defendant in civil case

JAKARTA: The Jakarta High Court has dismissed a Rp 1 billion (US$98,000) libel suit by deve-loper PT Duta Pertiwi against Koh Seng Seng, or A Seng, a shop owner and former tenant of an ITC shopping center owned by the plaintiff.

A Seng said he found out about the ruling while browsing the high court's Website on Sunday, further discovering the ruling had been made on May 15.

"So I went to the high court this morning to confirm whether the verdict was final, and they said it was, although the court hasn't sent the verdict letter to the Jakarta District Court yet," he said in a telephone interview Monday.

A Seng said he was grateful that the court had sided with him.

"I read somewhere that only 10 percent of Jakarta judges are not corrupt. I'm so glad I found one among that 10 percent," he said.

Duta Pertiwi sued A Seng for defaming the company, after he had his letters published in the media about the company's alleged deception of shop owners in regard to land taxes.

He lost the civil case late last year, when the North Jakarta District Court ordered him to pay Duta Pertiwi Rp 1 billion. His criminal case is now being tried at the East Jakarta District Court. - JP
