EMARANG: An anticorruption committee in Semarang, Central Java has denounced a plan by Diponegoro University to award Attorney General Hendarman Supandjo an honorary doctorate Saturday.
The Central Java Committee to Investigate and Eradicate Corruption, Collusion and Nepotism (KP2KKN) said Friday that Hendarman did not deserve the honor.
"An honorary doctorate is normally conferred on those with extraordinary achievements in the fields of humanity, social affairs, the economy, health and other sciences," said KP2KKN secretary Eko Haryanta.
He said that as attorney general, Hendarman - a graduate of the university's law school and head of its alumni association - had yet to show any outstanding achievement in combating corruption.
"He has even protected several major graft suspects," Eko said.
"ICW *Indonesia Corruption Watch* data shows around 40 major graft cases are still unresolved by the AGO under his leadership."
Diponegoro University rector Susilo Wibowo said the awarding would go ahead as planned.
"We've conducted a thorough study," he said.
"Ten professors at our law school say Hendarman deserves the degree for his fight against graft."
