embers of the Egyptian community and a large number of friends of Egypt gathered at the residence of Egyptian Ambassador to Indonesia Ahmed M. El Kewaisny on Thursday evening to celebrate the 57th anniversary of the 1952 Egyptian Revolution.
On July 23 every year, Egyptians all over the world, including in Indonesia, celebrate Egyptian National Day, which not only transformed Egypt in many ways but also inspired many freedom struggles in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
The revolution was launched as a military coup by a group of young military officers against the late King Farouk I. These rebel officers, also known as Free Officers, transformed the coup into a complete revolution under the leadership of Gamal Abdel Nasser.
Egypt and Indonesia enjoy good, friendly relations that are growing rapidly. "Our relationship is unique," said Ambassador Kewaisny.
"Egypt was the first country to recognize Indonesia's independence in 1947. Our relationship is growing in various fields."
Although the celebration came just six days after the deadly bombings of two major hotels in Jakarta, hundreds of guests were there to celebrate the historical day.
People's Consultative Assembly speaker Hidayat Nurwahid, State Minister for Women's Empowerment Meutia Farida Hatta Swasono, Foreign Ministry Director General for Multilateral Affairs Rezlan Ishar Jenie and his colleague A. Chandra Salim, the director for Middle Eastern affairs, Dean of Diplomatic Corps Ambassador Yousif R. Alsharhan, members of the diplomatic community and scores of Indonesian public figures attended the colorful gathering.
