Parents welcome newborn babies on auspicious date

P

arents expecting babies on the auspicious date, 09-09-09, welcomed their newborns Wednesday.

Indonesian celebrity couple Angelina Sondakh and Adjie Massaid, both members of parliament, were among those who booked the date for the birth of their baby. Angelina gave birth to a baby boy at Brawijaya Women and Children's Hospital in South Jakarta on Wednesday.

Many people believe the combination of the numbers in the date brings good luck as Feng Shui masters believe that nine symbolizes the "peak of everything", making Wednesday a fully-booked day for weddings, the launching of businesses and cesarean sections.

At Bersalin Asih Maternity Hospital in Panglima Polim, South Jakarta, five babies were born on Wednesday as of midday, with another five scheduled to be born by the end of the day.

Doctor Ari Waluyo who performed at least two cesarean sections said the mothers of the babies requested the operations so that they could give birth on the lucky day.

"There were requests, but the women were nearly due as well," he told kompas.com.

Ari said that as long as the period of pregnancy and patients' indications showed the baby could not be delivered normally, the requests for C-sections on the rare date were normal.

He said the pregnancies must have exceeded 37 weeks.

"The *delivery* that I assisted today had all these indications. The baby's head was upside down so we had to operate. The mother chose today," Ari said.

In Cimahi, West Java, parents of six babies born at Cibabat General Hospital were thrilled to give birth on the auspicious date.

Juliani Harun, who delivered her second child Wednesday, said that she was happy and surprised that her child was born on the unique date.

"I am happy and thrilled and cannot believe that my second child is born on this unique date. Praise the lord, the baby is also healthy," she told Antara state news agency.

She said that aside for giving birth on Sept. 9, 2009, her delivery was carried out at 9 a.m. as well.

An employee at Cibabat Hospital said that from six babies born Wednesday, two were delivered through C-sections, while four were born naturally.

Couple Maria Mutiara and Bangun Silitonga said they were happy their child was born on Wednesday.

"We're happy that our child was born on this lucky date," he told Antara.

At the Cikini Communion of Churches Hospital, spokeswoman Rosiana said the lucky date had not affected the average number of babies born on Wednesday.

"We had three deliveries today and that's normal," she said.

Two of the babies were delivered by C-sections, while one was delivered naturally.
