AKARTA: Home Minister Gamawan Fauzi says one of his immediate jobs would be to facilitate local elections in 246 regencies and provinces across the country, which would take place simultaneously next year.

"The regional elections are expected to run well. This is the most pressing agenda of mine," Gamawan told Antara on the sidelines of his visit to Padang on Monday.

He said the government would synchronize the 2004 regional administration law and the 2008 election law, which says voters need to tick their ballots once. In previous regional elections, voters were required to perforate ballots.

Gamawan said the government would help the General Elections Commission and its regional arms administer the elections to pick new regents, mayors and governors.

He also insisted that regional elections in 13 quake-hit regencies and municipality in West Sumatra and the gubernatorial election in the province would take place in accordance with the schedule. - JP
