printer Suryo Agung Wibowo, whose haul of two gold medals in track-and-field has earned him the title of the fastest runner in Southeast Asia, will be looking for more gold in Laos.
"I have a personal target. I want to grab three gold medals in Laos. December 13 is mine!" said 26-year-old, referring to the date for the 100-meter sprint at the upcoming Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.
Track-and-field events are among 28 sports to be competed in at the 25th SEA Games in Laos, which run from Dec. 9 to 18.
Besides looking to repeat his domination in the 100- and 200-meter sprints that he displayed in Thailand two years ago, Suryo wants to add a win in the 4x100-meter relay at the Main Stadium, National Sports Complex, in Vientiane.
His time of 10.25 seconds in the 100 meters is the SEA Games record, shaving a fraction from the old time of 10.29 set in 2001.
A total of 45 gold medals are up for grabs from track-and-field, from which the Indonesian contingent is seeking to retain the seven gold medals won at the last Games.
"We're confident we can get another seven gold medals in Laos," , Indonesian Track-and-Field Association (PASI) general secretary Tigor Tanjung said Tuesday.
The gold medalists in Thailand were Triyaningsih (women's 5,000 and 10,000 meters); Yahuza (men's marathon); Dedeh Irawati (women's 100 meters hurdles) and Dwi Ratna (women's discus throw).
"For me, not winning another gold in the marathon is not an option," said Yahuza, 28.
The squad members attended a press conference Tuesday, held in conjunction with a sponsorship extension by Sports Station and sports apparel maker Mizuno.
PASI will send 29 athletes to compete in 24 sports. Half the number are younger athletes who will use the Laos trip as a springboard for the 2011 SEA Games in Jakarta.
Four members were named only recently: Darwati (women's 20-kilometer walk), Zulkarnain Purba (men's 400 meters hurdles), Yulius Morin (men's javelin) and Heru Astriyanto (men's 400 meters).
"Darwati, who was second in Thailand, stands a good chance of winning gold this time, as Malaysian gold medalist Yuan Yu Fang will not be competing," said PASI athlete development deputy head Paulus Lay.
In Thailand, Darwati recorded a time of 1 hour 52 minutes, well behind Yuan's 1:41.
Sixteen-year-old Riski Latip will be Indonesia's youngest team member. He will run in the 4x100-meter relay with Fadlin, Apip Dwi Cahyono, Fernando Lumain and Suryo.
