AKARTA: The Constitutional Court predicted that half of the regional elections to be held next year across the country would end in legal battles.
Court chief Mahfud M.D. said there would be about 244 regional elections in 2010, including nine at the provincial level.
“Half are prone to disputes.
“But, we are ready to resolve the expected election disputes,” he said Tuesday.
Under the election law, the Constitutional Court has the authority to settle the election disputes within 14 days.
Mahfud said that the court would step up coordination with the General Elections Commission, regional election bodies and the election supervisory body to minimize the disputes.
Many of the regional elections were postponed from the previous schedule of 2009 due to legislative and presidential elections.
Home Minister Gamawan Fauzi earlier said that it would be difficult to continue delaying the polls as it could violate the 2004 Regional Administration Law.
The law calls for elections for regional chiefs every five years.
