AKARTA: Mar'ie Muhammad transferred his job as chairman of the Indonesian Red Cross to his successor Jusuf Kalla in a handing over ceremony on Tuesday.

Attending the job transfer ceremony were former social affairs minister Bachtiar Chamsyah, the former deputy chairman of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), Aksa Machmud, as well as representatives of donor countries.

Kalla, the former vice president, was elected on Dec. 22 to chair the PMI until 2016.

Kalla said that under his leadership, the PMI would improve the national blood stock to prepare for any increased demand for blood by hospital patients and victims of natural disasters.
