ANADO, North Sulawesi: Dengue fever in South Minahasa, North Sulawesi, has so far claimed the lives of three people, while 55 were still being treated at hospitals.

"The regency's dengue cases have now risen to around 90 percent between 2008 and 2010," said South Minahasa Health Office head Dirk Lengkong on Friday, adding most dengue sufferers were between the ages of 3 and 12.

"The provincial administration has set the extraordinary status on the regency due to the substantial increase."

The local administration has allocated Rp 100 million (US$10,752) to carry out preventive measures and provide medicine to hospitals, besides fumigation in 11 of the 17 districts in the regency. - JP
