The article "RI as a new middle power?" by Prof. Anak Agung Banyu Perwita, published on this page on Nov. 12, 2009, is very similar to a piece written by Carl Ungerer titled "The *Middle Power' Concept in Australian Foreign Policy", which was published in the Australian Journal of Politics and History: Volume 53, Number 4, 2007, pp.538-551.
Both in terms of ideas and in the phrases used, it is very evident this is not the original work of the writer.
The Jakarta Post takes claims of plagiarism and the infringement of ideas very seriously.
We hereby withdraw the offending article by Anak Agung Banyu Perwita and apologize to our readers, most especially to Mr. Carl Ungerer, for this editorial oversight.

It is a sadness that the Jakarta Post withdrew the accused article from its circulation. Many people may stil want to see the article and do analysis, for example, to what extent the plagiarism by the accused author has been done, in which part, etc. The Jakarta Post is better to maintain the article and what it may need to do is to put a note or online stamp on that article saying something that the article has been accused and proven to be a plagiarised work. If the article is still in there then people especially students and scientists to be or even scientists (from Indonesia, especially) can see how plagiarism looks like and get themselves to learn about it from a real example. So my point is to give people opportunity to a real case about this topic. Now the article has been withdrew and we have no chance at all to see and learn from it. The Jakarta Post may reconsider to put the article back (please?!)Imam K (not verified), Dublin, Ireland — Thu, 02/18/2010 - 7:46pm
Sadly I would say that this is only an example of plagiarisms that happens in our academic environment in Indonesia. Any further investigation must be taken into account and therefore the government must take this issue seriously as I believe that this is not only happening in one particular university, but more embarrassingly that this has been an issue across the universities and research institutes in Indonesia due to weak law enforcement.Arie Nugraha (not verified), bandung — Thu, 02/11/2010 - 7:39pm

It is really making down an intelectual pride to anybody who has studied as University student or senior high school.Taking somebody idea without knowing the owner is a thieving or robbery, but if only as references will be no problem or as a footnote to sharpen his/her analysis. Hopefully no more plagiator come out again after this incident. as a real intelectualist anybody should have his/her own pride of his/her intelectualities to maintain his/her own character as an intelectual.Rohayati Paseng (not verified), Honolulu, USA — Thu, 02/11/2010 - 4:12am
There is a saying in Indonesian that goes like this: guru kencing berdiri murid kenting berlari. Shame on Prof. Anak Agung Banyu Perwita. I am glad that the The Jakarta Post did this retraction! Plagiarism = THEFT!!CABLAKA (not verified), BANYUMAS — Wed, 02/10/2010 - 4:57pm
Aduh aduh aduh.. iam afraid somebody will uncover my plagiarism, especially in my TUGAS SEMESTERAN. how can? i think allmost all of my friends (and also I my self) do a kind of plagiarism although we dont aware it..beruntungnya, our lecturers dont like browsing internet..if they do,waaah, they will know that 90% of us is plagiator..i dont know that plagiarism is very serious matter like that..hemmm.however,started from now, i promise to not plagiate any more. I PROMISE!! to my lecturers and the persons i steal their idea, i want to say I AM SORRY..DONT PUNNISH ME PLEASE..Jontor_jakarta — Wed, 02/10/2010 - 4:35pm
We have to investigate first, do not judge that it is truly plagiarism or not. For example, there is at least 4 bar in a song they are a song plagiator or not. So, in writing, it should be proved first to public, how far is it said as plagiator.Maketab Mohamed (not verified), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia — Wed, 02/10/2010 - 7:56am
Dear Editor, Seems like Prof. Anak Agung Banyu Perwita is following the trend in universities nowadays - he is following the culture of "cut and paste", which is part of the Internet culture. During the pre-Internet era, researchers pored through books, journals and other periodicals in half-lit libraries and manually wrote sentences or passages into cards, to be later typed by typewriters into articles and in the process modifying the original sentences etc. Nowadays it is easier to find articles in the Internet, copy the materials and paste it in "your" article modifying the words or sentences without proper referencing and claim the article as "yours". Prof. Anak Agung Banyu Perwita is a victim of his own success as he has proven that he can write on his own considering that he completed his PhD in Flinders University in Australia and his M.A. in Lancaster University, U.K. but probably due to time constraints, he took the short cut way, which he will regret all his life.Eya (not verified), jogja — Tue, 02/09/2010 - 9:47pm
...if oneday anak agung banyu perwita has a son/a daughter who pursue an undergraduate degree and has not finished the thesis writing for a long...looonggg time...(just like me)... i think he will not encourage his kid to finish it.. instead, he will just go to shopping centre in jogja and buy already made thesis or find a thesis maker in a small in-column advertising and pay the price for his kid 's undergraduate thesis... to me his reason "the unintentionally thing" is illogical and out of the rationale thinking...watever his situation was to professor banyu: ure just simply so pathetic..if i were u i would've given back all the academic degrees to your college/uni
