Comments: 'No urgency to build nuclear nuke plants'

Civil society groups insist there is no urgent reason to develop nuclear power plants in Indonesia, citing the country’s large sources of alternative energy from coal, geothermal heat, water and wind.

They claim the notorious energy shortage is due to the government’s poor management in dealing with energy resources as most of its coal and gas is exported. “It is too risky for the country to develop nuclear power plants because Indonesia doesn’t have the technology, such as how to treat hazardous waste,” Dian Abraham, the director of the Anti-Nuclear Society (Manusia), said Thursday.

Your comments:

One of the major requirements for sustaining human progress is an adequate source of energy.

Currently the largest sources of energy are the combustion of coal, oil and natural gas.

They will last quite a while, but will probably run out or become harmful in tens to hundreds of years.

Solar energy will also work, but it has not been significantly developed because of its high cost.

This high cost as a main source, e.g. for central station electricity, is likely to continue, and nuclear energy is likely to remain cheaper.

A major advantage of nuclear energy is that it doesn’t  release carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere.

Nothing is perfectly safe, but if we obey all the safety protocols, it is safe enough to be relied upon as a source of energy.

I think we all agree that our biggest threat is global warming and considering that there is no other way to boost the economy of this nation except from accelerating growth in energy availability, nuclear power is the best option.

It is better for those NGOs to learn some basic physics and a little bit of engineering sense before they sprout nonsense. Go Indonesia!

This country is experiencing a problem of insufficient electricity. But it’s not a matter of a resource crisis, it is because of government mismanagement.

We have more than enough resources, but instead of using them domestically, the government is exporting them.

They export more than 60 percent of our resources, instead of using them to provide people with adequate electricity. We also have more than enough renewable energy that is cleaner and less riskier than nuclear power, but the government isn’t willing to develop that either.

Research has concluded that 40 percent of the world’s geothermal potential is here in Indonesia. But of the 27,000 megawatts of potential geothermal energy, the government now only uses about 800 megawatts. So it’s not about a lack of sources. It’s about stupidity.

Why take risks with nuclear when we have 27,000 kilowatts of geothermal potential?
