AKARTA: Thousands of participants are preparing to celebrate Cap Go Meh, the 15th day of the Chinese New Year, next Sunday in Kota, West Jakarta.

Among other activities, participants will stage a parade featuring 67 sedans containing toapekong (miniature statues of traditional gods) from Vihara Dharma Jaya temple in West Jakarta. The parade will pass several streets including Jl. Hayam Wuruk and Jl. Gadjah Mada, West Jakarta.

The parade will begin at noon and end at 5 p.m.

Other events include a liong (dragon dance), barongsai (lion dance) and ondel-ondel (giant Betawi puppets).

Youanto Kenchana Jaya, who heads the event organizers from Vihara Dharma Jaya, said on Sunday that the upcoming event will be the biggest one his temple has organized since 2003.

"A lot of residents from other cities, such as Cilacap, Bekasi and Tangerang, will join us," he said at a press conference.

Event spokesman Suryadi said residents, especially Chinese-Indonesians, hoped the event runs smoothly, and ushers in safety and prosperity all year.
