At least four former legislators from the United Development Party (PPP) took combined bribes of Rp 1
t least four former legislators from the United Development Party (PPP) took combined bribes of
Rp 1.5 billion (US$163,000) for the 2004 election of a senior central bank official, a document revealed Tuesday.
The document obtained by The Jakarta Post from the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) indicated the four PPP politicians received bribes from a businesswoman representing Bank Indonesia senior deputy governor Miranda S. Goeltom.
The four are identified as Endin Akhmad Jalaluddin Soefihara, Sofyan Usman, Uray Faisal Hamid and Danial Tandjung.
The KPK named Endin a suspect in the case and arrested him Feb. 9.
The Corruption Court will begin trying Endin soon, said KPK spokesman Johan Budi.
The case implicates most members of the House of Representatives’ Commission X, overseeing banking and budget affairs, in 2004.
On Monday, prosecutors alleged 19 legislators from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) had received bribes in the case.
The revelation came at the trial of former PDI-P legislator Dudhie Makmun Murod. The alleged bribes ranged from Rp 200 million to Rp 1.4 billion apiece.
The document from the KPK listed the alleged bribes as “gratuities” from businesswoman Nunun Nurbaeti, a friend of Miranda’s.
Nunun is the wife of former National Police deputy chief Comr. Gen. Adang Daradjatun, who is now a legislator with the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS).
Endin claimed to have received an envelope with green markings from Ahmad “Arie” Hakim Safari at a hotel near the House complex shortly after Miranda won the election.
The envelope contained 30 traveler’s checks worth Rp 50 million each, Endin said.
He added he took 10 checks for himself and gave five to Sofyan, five to Uray and 10 to Danial.
The document names Arie as a friend of Nunun’s.
Dudhie has also admitted to receiving a similar envelope, but with red markings, containing 196 traveler’s checks.
He claimed he split them with 18 other PDI-P legislators.
The KPK document indicates Arie also had envelopes with yellow and white markings.
Endin’s lawyer, Soleh Amin, called for fairness in his client’s case.
“All suspects must undergo due legal process,” he said.
PDI-P House chairman Tjahjo Kumolo conceded his party had voted for Miranda, but denied money was involved.
“I know nothing of these gratuities,” he said. “We voted for Miranda because she was competent and the best of the three candidates.”
The case came to light when Agus Condro, a former PDI-P legislator, claimed that several legislators had received bribes to vote for Miranda.
Two other suspects in the case are Hamka Yandhu, from the Golkar Party, and Udju Djuhaeri, from the armed forces faction and a former member of the Supreme Audit Agency.
