AKARTA: Youth swimmer Pratama Siahaan booked the country’s third slot for the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore at the last day of the event’s qualifier at the Singapore National Age Group Championships on Sunday.

The only male swimmer in the team, Pratama, 18, passed the 2:07.88 qualifying limit for the men’s 200-meter butterfly after he finished in two minutes and 7.43 seconds on Sunday.

A day earlier, teammate Patrisia Yosita, 16, also qualified for the Youth Olympics’ women’s 100-meter freestyle. At the first day of the qualifiers, Fibriani Ratna Marita, 16, book the first ticket in the women’s 200-meter individual medley.

“It is now important [to maintain] the self-motivation of each of the swimmers. The coaches must work harder to support their development [in the run-up to the Games],” coach and team manager Hartadi Noertjojo told The Jakarta Post on Sunday.

Because of the on-going uncertainty of implementation of the Indonesia Gold Program (Prima), Hartadi said he expected better financial support and the government’s assurance that the national training program would take place prior to the upcoming Youth Olympics, scheduled for Aug. 14-26. — JP
