URABAYA: Muhammad Noer, a Madurese notable figure and former governor of East Java from 1967 to 1976, died Friday at 8:50 a.m. at Dharmo Hospital in Surabaya.
Noer died of complications during a medical procedure.
A former Indonesian ambassador to France in the 1980s, Noer was one of the pioneers of the Suramadu bridge, which connects Madura to mainland Java.
The bridge was completed and inaugurated in 2009, but Noer had first proposed the idea in 1950 when he was deputy regent of Bangkalan.
Raden Panji Mohammad Noer was born in Beler Hamlet, Rong Tengah village, Sampang regency, on Jan. 13, 1918.
