Ancol desalination plant online by December

T

he owners of Ancol Dreamland Park say its US$5.72 million seawater reverse-osmosis facility will provide clean water for its affluent residential complexes and theme parks in Ancol, North Jakarta, in December.

“The facility will initially treat 5,000 cubic meters of seawater every day and gradually increase that amount to 10,000 cubic meters,” PT Pembangunan Jaya Ancol (PJAA) corporate secretary Fransiskus Xaverius Husni told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.

At present, private tap water company PT Aetra Air Jakarta provides PJAA’s theme park and housing developments in Ancol with 12,000 cubic meters of clean water every day, Husni said.

When the desalination plant starts operation, PJAA would only need 7,000 cubic meters of water from Aetra, he added.

However, the facility would not provide clean water to those living in the slums situated along the eastern side of Jl. Ancol Baru in North Jakarta, Husni said.

“Our production capacity is limited.”

PJAA planned to expand clean water production after the plant opens, he said.

The company also hoped the facility could be sold to the public in the future, PJAA corporate planning department chief Nugroho Da Gomez said.

PJAA and its partner in the project, PT Arkonin, had invested more than Rp 53 billion (US$5.72 million) in the facility, which was built behind Atlantis Water Adventure, another recreation park owned by PJAA, Gomez said.

The Public Utilities Board of Singapore, he said, was consultants in the project, overseeing construction and providing guidelines for the facility’s day-to-day operation.

Singapore opened its first desalination plant in 2005 and now produces more than 130,000 cubic meters of clean water from seawater every day, said Gomez.

Reverse osmosis makes clean water by forcing seawater through plastic membranes with microscopic pores.

The membranes extract dissolved salts, while excess silt is removed with chemicals.

Separately, a new ride named Hysteria would be opened at the Fantasy World (Dufan) theme park in Ancol in June, another PJAA official said.

Riders would be carried 53 meters straight up before Hysteria drops them in a high-speed free fall, the official said.

The Floating Pool, a swimming pool with a level of salinity matching that of the Red Sea, would also open in June. The two projects are estimated to cost Rp 25 billion and Rp 3 billion respectively, the official said. (tsy)
