ampaign advertising posted by candidates running for the upcoming South Tangerang mayoral election in October, has drawn criticism from municipal councilors who are angry the ads are not taxed.

“Those candidates should be taxed because they have put up their campaign ads, such as billboards and posters, in public places,” said Irvanul Hakim, from the municipality council commission A on legal and administrative affairs.

Irvanul said the council would seek clarifications from the relevant city revenue subagency about whether candidates should be charged for their ads.

“Otherwise, we will ask the municipal administration to take the ads down,” he said.

Councilor Bambang Triyadi agreed, saying that public places fell under the jurisdiction of the state.

“Consequently, we should charge candidates for the use of those spaces,” said Bambang, a member of commission B, which is in charge of budget and revenue.

“We should consider it a violation [should the candidates do not pay any taxes],” he said.

He also mentioned there was an agreement with candidates about not placing any ads in the city center, including on Jl. Raya Serpong.

He said that most candidates had violated this agreement by placing their ads in the ad-free zone.

The Jakarta Post observed Thursday that large-size billboards of those candidates were displayed in some city arteries, including on Jl. Raya Serpong. No actions have yet been taken by the municipal administration in response to the violation.

South Tangerang municipality will hold its first-ever mayoral election in October. The administration was established in November 2008 and has been operational since Jan. 24, 2009.

Some candidates running for the election include Airin Rachmi Diany, sister-in-law of Banten Governor Ratu Atut Chosiyah, Achmad Suwandhi, the younger brother of Tangerang Mayor Wahidin Halim, Iskandar, the younger brother of Coordinating Economic Minister Hatta Rajasa and Harry Mulya Zain, the Tangerang municipal secretary.

The administration said earlier that it had allocated Rp 27 billion (US$2,97 million) for organizing the election.

The new mayor and deputy mayor will run the municipality from 2010 to 2015.
