AKASSAR, South Sulawesi: Officers from South Sulawesi’s Natural Resources Conservation Agency and Soekarno Port in Makassar have thwarted an attempt to smuggle 12,000 protected turtle eggs from Buru Island in Maluku province to Kota Baru city in South Kalimantan.
Head of protection and preservation at the agency, Faat Rudiyanto, said Saturday that the eggs had been confiscated late Friday from two Indonesian men moments after they had debarked from ship Gunung Dempo at the port.
The men — 57-year-old Idris and 50-year-old La Uni — were carrying the eggs in 13 large cigarette cartons, he added.
“When the passengers left the ship, the officers saw the boxes and became suspicious because the two men seemed agitated. We checked them and found the eggs,” Faat said.
The two smugglers immediately admitted the eggs had been ordered by a Kota Baru resident, Zulkifli, but said they did not know what Zulkifli had intended to do with them.
If proven guilty of violating the 1990 Law on conservation of biodiversity and ecosystems, Idris and La Uni could face five years in jail and fines of Rp 100 million each. — JP
