First rabies fatality in Buleleng

BULELENG: A thirteen year-old girl died of rabies after being bitten by a cat, the first victim of rabies in Buleleng regency.

Ni Kadek Vina Kurniadewi, resident of Pemaron village, died Friday at the Buleleng Hospital after receiving intensive treatment at the Singaraja Hospital.

The victim's father Gede Widiada said Sunday his daughter was bitten on her arm by a stray cat about three months ago, but had never received vaccine since the victim didn't show any rabies subsequently.

Buleleng Hospital director Nyoman Mardana confirmed the victim died of rabies infection.

"The patient developed symptoms of rabies. And according to her parents, she was bitten by a monkey, a dog and a cat. But we are still studying her medical record further." - JP
