JAMBI CITY, Jambi: More than 18,000 vision-impaired residents may not be able to vote in Jambi governor's election on June 19 because they cannot use the ballot paper, says an activist
AMBI CITY, Jambi: More than 18,000 vision-impaired residents may not be able to vote in Jambi governor's election on June 19 because they cannot use the ballot paper, says an activist.
The Jambi Disabled People Election Access (PPUA Penca) group has filed a complaint with the Jambi General Elections Commission (KPUD), PPUA Penca head Erna Rahim said.
The organization had previously submitted a sightless ballot proposal to Jambi's provincial legislature, which was approved by the legislature and KPUD.
PPUA Penca proposed that ballot papers for sightless voters be printed in Braille and list candidates in order of their candidate numbers.
However, the ballot paper produced differs from the proposed one.
The KPUD's current printed ballot paper for sightless voters is filled with errors: Candidates are not listed according to candidate number, the ballot is printed on an inappropriate paper stock and there is no place to punch a vote, she said.
The organization had previously educated Jambi's sightless voters to use its proposed ballot papers.
"If the wrong format is used, it won't be possible for us to educate people again since election day is already close," she said.
"We want the ballot paper to be changed or more than 18,000 blind people will not be able to exercise their rights during the elections," she said. - JP
