In the upcoming movie Darah Garuda (Blood of Garuda), the 28-year-old stars as a prostitute named Lastri, who lived in the 1940s.

“I have played the role of a prostitute in the modern era, and now in the 1940s,” said Atiqah, who previously took on the role of a prostitute in Jamilah dan Sang Presiden (Jamilah and the President) and Cinta Setaman (Love Potpourri). “I don’t mind prostitute roles in movies, as long as the character and story are strong,” added the daughter of senior actress Ratna Sarumpaet.

Some might say a newcomer should avoid taking roles with negative images, but Atiqah said she simply didn’t agree with that.

“I believe there’s a psychological explanation behind every character [with a negative image] — no matter how negative [the image is],” she said, as quoted by Inilah.com.

In Darah Garuda, the second movie in a trilogy about Indonesia’s Independence War — that kicked off with Merah Putih (Red and White) last year, Atiqah plays alongside Lukman Sardi, Donny Alamsyah, Darius Sinathrya and Alex Komang.

“I am Javanese woman in the movie, which was hard because I’m actually a Batak,” she said. “I also had to use a real gun — it’s so damn heavy,” she added. — JP
