AKARTA: Constitutional Court chief Mahfud M.D. said he supported a proposal for regional electoral disputes to be handled by local high courts rather than the Constitutional Court.

"I fully agree that the high courts take over the dispute settlements.

"We *the Constitutional Court* are fed up with handling the same thing over and over again," Mahfud said in Jakarta on Wednesday. He said all of the disputes centered on accusations of vote rigging.

The proposal came from Home Minister Gamawan Fauzi. He said time and money would be saved by moving the disputes to local courts.

Before the Constitutional Court was founded in 2003, general election disputes were sent to the District Court and disputes about provincial election to the High Court. - JP
