AKARTA: Manulife insurance company and Jakarta Green Monster (JGM), an NGO focusing on wetlands conservation, planted 600 mangroves in the Kapuk Muara Ecotourism Mangrove Forest in North Jakarta.
“Mangroves, whose habitats are coastal areas, are very effective in absorbing water during high tides and also reduce floods, especially in the rainy seasons,” JGM head Enny Sudarmonowati said Saturday.
She added that the program supported the city administration’s effort to turn the north coast area into a green belt.
The 95-hectare forest, currently home to various species of mangrove, is located along the Sedyatmo toll road, the main access road to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. —JP
