AKARTA: President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono inaugurated on Monday new General Election Commission (KPU) member Saut Hamonangan Sirait to replace Andi Nurpati, who was dismissed from the post.
Saut will serve the remainder of Andi’s term, which will expire in 2012.
Attending the ceremony at the Presidential Palace were Vice President Boediono, several ministers, Indonesian Military chief Adm. Agus Suhartono, and KPU chairman Hafiz Anshary.
The House of Representatives’ Commission II overseeing home affairs and elections selected Saut to replace Andi in July.
Saut, who lost a race for a Regional Representatives Council (DPD) seat in 2009, previously said he was an independent candidate and was not attached to any political party
Andi was dismissed by the KPU’s Honorary Council for ethics violation when she joined the executive board of Yudhoyono’s Democratic Party while serving as a KPU member. — JP
