UPANG, East Nusa Tenggara: The prevalence of HIV/AIDS in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) has grown alarmingly in the past year, Governor Esthon Foennay said, with 291 deaths from 1,129 reported cases.
“I am very concerned about this matter. There needs to be coordination among related agencies to respond to the problem because if ignored, HIV/AIDS can be a much more dangerous threat than terrorism,” Foennay said.
He said cases of HIV/AIDS had been found in 16 of the province’s 21 regencies and municipalities.
”The actual number may be higher because many cases go unreported. Five regencies have not reported their findings, but this does not mean they are free of HIV/AIDS,” Foennay said.
The province’s AIDS Prevention Commission (KPA) showed most of the cases were found in Belu regency, with 351 cases and 55 deaths in the first quarter of this year. — JP
