Comment: Fresh green ideas needed

N

ov. 2, p. 9: People often complain about scorching heat in Jakarta without realizing that the city has less than half the recommended number of trees it needs to provide shade and create fresh air. Bambang Sulistyantara, a landscape architecture expert from the Bogor Institute of Agriculture, said a city needs a 4-meter canopy of trees per person. “The bigger the number of trees, the better they will absorb carbon, which will in turn reduce the heat,” he said.  Data from the city’s parks and cemetery agency shows that 4 million trees now grow in the city, about one tree for every two people in Jakarta, whose population exceeded 9.6 million this year.

Your comments:

This is a great idea but should be thought carefully in order that the most suitable, robust trees are planted to reap the most benefits in terms of longevity.
Other added benefits of trees in addition to the micro-climatic benefits are the aesthetic benefits for residents and those visiting the city alike. Stipulating tree planting as part of new developments is essential and tree planting should be proposed as part of a citywide green master plan with backing from the administrative authorities, rather than relying solely on the goodwill of individual citizens.

How about planting trees not just merely for the convenience of having cooler temperature but for more crucial health issues such as air filtering? With the amount of pollution in Jakarta, surely the planting of trees would be very beneficial for human health.
