AKARTA: The ongoing eruptions at Mount Merapi have disrupted the tryout schedule for the Indonesian national soccer squad against several Asian national teams for next month’s AFF Cup 2010.
Iman Arief, the head of technical affairs for the Indonesian Soccer Association’s National Team Body (BTN), said Tuesday that matches against the Philippines and Hong Kong had been cancelled, while Taiwan had yet to confirm.
The BTN was still looking for another national team to replace the Philippines, he added.
Initially, Indonesia was scheduled to face the Philippines next Tuesday and Hong Kong on Nov. 21 in Jakarta as well as Taiwan on Nov. 24 in Surakarta, Central Java.
National team coach Alfred Riedl said he hoped the eruptions would not further disrupt the schedule. Several international airlines cancelled flights to Jakarta after Mt. Merapi, located hundreds of kilometers away from the capital, unleashed powerful eruptions. — JP
