he Artha Graha business group lent a hand to people affected by the Merapi eruption and the earthquake and tsunami that hit the Mentawai islands. Following the earthquake and tsunami that hit Mentawai in October, the company in cooperation with the Medical Battalion of the Army Strategic Command (KOSTRAD) sent volunteers to evacuate people, help find missing persons and provide logistics for people affected by the disaster, the company said.
The firm also sent volunteers to assist the Merapi Slope Community in evacuating villagers when the volcano erupted last month, providing logistics and communication facilities for refugees. The Artha Graha volunteers also stood guard at 114 locations in four regencies in the vicinity of Mount Merapi, namely Sleman, Boyolali, Magelang and Klaten.
The Artha Graha volunteers were well prepared to handle the impact of the Merapi eruption as they also took part in the volunteer work when the same mountain erupted in 2006. — JP
