AKARTA: The Constitutional Court predicts it will hear at least 54 election disputes this year from the total 67 scheduled local elections.
“It will be about 80 percent of the total number of local elections,” Constitutional Court chief Mahfud M.D. told a press conference Monday. The prediction was based on the court’s case load last year.
He added that the court was slated to hear an additional six local election disputes left over from last year.
The court began handling election cases in November 2008 following the enactment of the 2008 law on regional administrations, which gave it the authority to mediate regional election disputes.
Mahfud added that his office also expected to hear 72 new judicial reviews, plus an additional 59 cases from last year.
The institution’s primary mandate is to review laws to make sure they are congruous with the Constitution.
It will also settle two cases of authority of state institutions.
“So, the total cases we expected to hear is 193,” Mahfud said. — JP
