AKARTA: Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo said on Friday that he cannot issue a bylaw paving the way for the much-anticipated Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) system, an indication the city will delay the program designed to reduce road congestion.
Fauzi said the city could not issue the bylaw because the Transportation Ministry had not issued a regulation that would serve as a foundation for the policy.
“If we issued a bylaw without consulting the central government, we would have endorsed it long ago and the ERP would have been implemented this year,” Fauzi said on Friday.
Fauzi said the ERP system would use gates equipped with secuirty cameras, electronic payment sensors, and the ability to monitor car numbers.
Fauzi said the ERP would curb the number of motorized vehicles in the capital.
The city recorded that 6 million new motorbikes and 700,000 new cars are introduced to the city’s streets annually. — JP
