Scholarship to Japan or UK? Take your pick

AKARTA: The application process for Japan’s Ajinomoto scholarship for ASEAN international students and the United Kingdom’s Chevening scholarship, both for graduate studies, has been opened this year.

The Ajinomoto scholarship expects to award one student from each of the five ASEAN countries: Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Malaysia. Hopefuls would apply for the academic year 2012 at the University of Tokyo, majoring in one of the offered sciences including engineering, natural science, pharmaceuticals, agriculture and life sciences (excluding veterinarian and medical sciences), mathematical science and interdisciplinary information studies.

The application deadline is March 31 this year.

More information is available at www.ajinomoto.co.th.

For those who wish to enroll in graduate studies with English instruction, they may apply for the Chevening scholarship. The UK embassy in Jakarta recently announced on its website, http://ukinindonesia.fco.gov.uk, that the program was actually under a review after the UK government cut the public sector budget.

Final decisions regarding requirements, eligibility, target areas and study areas for the academic year 2011/2012 will be reached at the end of January, the website said. “But we decided to open the application process for Indonesia through the site: https://www.chevening.fco.gov.uk/CheveningApplications/CA_Start.aspx.” —JP
