BUD: Over 400 items of folk and antique furniture, mostly from the East Java region, dating back to between the 19th and early 20th century will be offered at the upcoming auction at Tony Raka Gallery on Jl. Raya Mas No 86, Mas village in Ubud, Bali, on Saturday, Feb. 5, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m Bali time, one hour ahead of Jakarta.
Collected over two decades by David Smith, the offered items are the finest examples of 19th century cabinets, wall dividers, chests, beds, benches, chairs, kris holders, oil lamp stands and various artifacts recorded in a colorful book entitled Antique Javanese Furniture and Folk Art written by acclaimed art observer Bruce W. Carpenter and published by Edition’s Didier Millet in 2008.
Smith’s collections revealed a long historical journey of the development of folk and antique furniture in Java, particularly East Java, the multiple influences from Eastern and Western artistic elements and the genius of local craftsmen.
Prior to the auction, managed by Sidharta Auctioneer, Smith will deliver talk at Tony Raka Gallery on Feb. 4 at 4.p.m. Public viewing is open until Feb. 5 at Tony Raka Gallery. For more information, readers can visit: www.artifactauctions.com and www.sidharta-autioneer.com.
