AKARTA: The Indonesian Environmental Forum (Walhi) condemned the decision made by the city administration on Wednesday to cut down 1,502 trees to make way for the construction of Transjakarta Busway corridor 11 that would connect Kampung Melayu and Pulo Gebang in East Jakarta.
The Jakarta Public Works Agency expects to start the project later this month.
“Why do they have to cut down the trees? As long as the trees do not stand in the way of the project, they shouldn’t be felled. And if they plant new trees elsewhere, I hope they do not just pick random locations,” the coordinator of Walhi Jakarta, Ubaidillah, said as quoted by kompas.com.
He added that usually the replacement trees were only palm trees, which were picked as the replacements because of their practicality.
“These substitution trees serve a different purpose,” he said.
Some of the trees that would be cut down for the project include banyan and mahogany trees on Jl. Bekasi Raya, Jl. I Gusti Ngurah Rai and Jl. Sentra Primer, all in East Jakarta. — JP
