AKARTA: The Jakarta administration has decided that the on-street parking on two of the most crowded streets in the city will be phased out starting June 20.
Transportation Agency head Udar Pristono said Monday that the agency would ready parking garages and road signs before the ban takes effect on Jl. Hayam Wuruk and Jl. Gajah Mada in Central Jakarta.
“Starting June 20, all vehicles — cars and motorcycles — are banned from parking along the street 24/7,” Pristono said. The agency initially planned to start the ban on June 22.
The on-street parking ban on the two streets, located within one of the city’s busiest and oldest business districts, is expected to be a pilot project for a more comprehensive moratorium on on-street parking.
The administration is expecting to move parking spaces to parking garages at shopping complexes in the area that reportedly have the capacity for 6,233 cars and 4,564 motorcycles. — JP
