he National Police will dispatch a request for the arrest of fugitive graft suspect Nunun Nurbaeti to 188 countries affiliated under the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) in a bid to take her back to the country, the police announced on Thursday.
Nunun is wanted by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) for allegedly disbursing travelers checks to several legislators in return for their votes for Miranda S. Goeltom, a candidate in the 2004 Bank Indonesia senior deputy governor elections.
The KPK has been on Nunun’s heels since the scandal erupted but she has repeatedly evaded arrest by bouncing from one country to another, including Singapore, Thailand and Cambodia. In their latest attempt to get hold of Nunun, KPK deputy chairman Haryono Umar asked the police to forward the request for arrest, known as a red notice, to the Interpol.
The red notice, an instrument belonging to the Interpol, is not an arrest warrant but acts as a request for Interpol “to assist the national police forces in identifying or locating” wanted fugitives “with a view to their arrest and extradition”, Interpol’s website states.
According to National Police chief Gen. Timur Pradopo, the police have received the red notice request submitted by the KPK. “We have processed the request made by the KPK and we will then forward their request to the International Police,” he said on Thursday.
Indonesia is one of the 188 member states joined together under the Interpol. Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam — countries Nunun had reportedly been in — are members of the Interpol as well.
Nunun skipped to Singapore a day before a travel ban was issued against her in March under the guise she needed medical treatment for senility.
National Police deputy spokesman Sr. Comr. Boy Rafli Amar said the police planned to send the red notice request to the Interpol headquarter, which is located in France, within two days.
“The office in Lyon, France, will then send the [approved] red notice to member countries,” he said on Thursday.
He added that Thailand and Cambodia would not be the only countries to receive the warrant.
“All member countries in the [Interpol] will be sent the red notice,” he said.
