AKARTA: Car and motorcycle accidents claim more than 60,000 lives away annually, most of them of productive age Vice President Boediono said while launching the Road Safety Decade 2011-2020 on Monday.
Losing people of productive ages, he said, was a big loss for the country. “We must pay this very serious attention, I believe. We have to address this matter and reduce the mortality rate from accidents,” he said in Jakarta as reported by Antara news agency.
Car and motorbike accidents happen for several reasons, he said, “but most of the accidents happen because of human error factor.”
Boediono said he hoped the Road Safety Decade campaign would encourage people to be more careful when driving. “We are now among the countries with the highest rate of accidents,” he said. “We have regulations, but they will be worthless unless we obey them.” — JP
